Well, it had to happen. Susan Boyle of “Britain’s Got Talent” and YouTube infamy has gotten a bit of a makeover.
I’m not sure how I feel about it. I mean, she’s finally getting recognition for her God-given talent. Why shouldn’t she try to look as good as she can? Why not go for Version 2.0?
On the other hand, part of her appeal was the disconnect between her appearance and her voice. Her dowdiness was part of her charm. The makeover just confirms that looks do matter.
I suppose that I shouldn’t be too surprised. Physical beauty does have an evolutionary basis. Humans are animals at the most basic level after all. It is inevitable that we first look at appearance and physical attributes before anything else. But, I digress.
Would she have achieved such meteoric fame had she made herself over before appearing on “Britain’s Got Talent”? The cynic in me says, probably not. Her connection to the public is dependent upon her very ordinariness.
I do give her kudos for putting herself out there. This phenomenon simply points to how sad we are as a society for prejudging a person based upon looks and believing that style is more important than substance.
In the meantime, check out her competition. Granted, they are kids. We’ll see if the cute factor plays a part in the competition.
