I just read in the newspaper today that the Catholic Church has finally pardoned John Lennon for his statement that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. It only took them 32 years to do so. For the Church, that is super quick. After all, it took them 360 years to change their stance on Galileo’s discovery that the Earth was not the center of the universe. And, they made him recant his beliefs!
While this is all fine and dandy, it is almost moot since these guys are dead!
Believe or not, I do consider myself Catholic – just a very lapsed one. I do intend to get my son baptized but hope that he will grow up to understand and appreciate other belief systems.
I read somewhere a while ago that Catholicism can be considered counter-culture as their main tenets are the opposite to what is socially acceptable; their stance on premarital sex for example.
If America can vote a black man into office, can the Church change their views about contraception and homosexuality?
We’ll see in 360 years.
